Man måste erkänna att den berömde vetenskapsfilosofen Karl Popper ibland var en mästare på att uttrycka sig schvungfullt. I sitt ”Replies to my critics” i Schilpps Library of Living Philosophers säger han exempelvis om Nelson Goodmans välkända ”new riddle of induction” att den ”is solved by the realization of the complete irrelevance of the problem”. Och i sitt svar till Hilary Putnams bidrag inleder han med följande fyra meningar:
”I enjoyed reading Professor Hilary Putnam’s paper because it is crisply and clearly written. But Professor Putnam’s conclusions are all wrong.
Professor Putnam is a leader of the younger generation of logicians, while I am a tottering old metaphysician. This is perhaps the explanation of why he found it unnecessary to do his homework”.
